Jennifer Y. Karvounis
Anchorage and Fairbanks resident Miss Jennifer Yanula Karvounis, 24, died from the untreated disease of addiction Wednesday, April 9, 2003, in Anchorage.

Jennifer was born Dec. 22, 1978, in Houston, Texas. She had attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks and was employed with Fairbanks Resource Agency. She was always concerned about and active in women's advocacy issues.

Her mother said, "Jennifer was a loving mother to McKayla Karvounis, 7, whose whereabouts are unknown due to the tragic mistake of adopting out her daughter to the Lower 48 as an answer to Jennifer's disease of untreated addiction.

"Jennifer touched everyone she met with love and unconditional understanding. Many times she was the originator of some of the most unique and expressionistic arts that many emulated. Had not the untreated disease of addiction caused her decline in health, Jennifer could have been one of the most heralded and productive members of this society of Americans.

"Jennifer's beauty, intelligence and love, which above all, always remained unconditional, will be forever remembered and missed. It is my opinion that this world has had a tragic loss of a young, beautiful and talented loving woman in Jennifer's death.

"Jennifer, I pray that you find the peace, comfort and love of God and are safely in his arms. You once told me you would like to be a shooting star out in the universe. Although I shall miss you the rest of my life, I will sing, now alone, to you your favorite childhood song we sang many times together and make a wish upon your star that you hear these words 'I love you.' From your mom."

Jennifer was preceded in death by her grandfather, Michael James Gerondakis, buried in Florence, Ore.; and grandmother Marta Sylvia Gerondakis, buried in Puerto Montt, Chile.

Jennifer Yanula Karvounis leaves behind her daughter, McKayla Karvounis, of the Lower 48; her mother, RP "Jamie" Gerondakis of Fairbanks; her grandparents, Peter and Yanula Karvounis of Athens, Greece; her great aunt and uncle Irma and Frank Stuto of Sacramento, Calif.; her great cousin, Lisa and Steve; her aunt and uncle, Dorothy and Alan O'Connor, and cousins Megan and Michael O'Connor; aunt and uncle Jeanette and Mike Gerondakis of Placerville, Calif.; cousins Philip, Nicholas, and Alex Gerondakis; aunts and uncles from Nafpaktos, Greece, Futula Karvounis, Anastasia Xintaris and various other family members whose names may not be mentioned, but are remembered nonetheless.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m., Monday, April 21, at the Jewish Synagogue, 1744 Aurora Drive. The service will be followed by a celebration of life for Jennifer at Wickersham Hall, 107 Wickersham St.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to a trust account in Jennifer's name at Northern Schools Federal Credit Union.
