Title: Due donne per la Pace

COMUNICATO

La L.I.D.U., Lega Italiana per i Diritti dell'Uomo (membro della
F.I.D.H.,

difficile compito", secondo quanto afferma l'organizzazione "Mille donne
per
il premio Nobel per la pace 2005".
La L.I.D.U. sostiene la candidatura di Angelica Edna Calò Livné,
educatrice
e giornalista israeliana, e Samar Sahhar, direttrice palestinese di un
orfanotrofio. Due donne la cui amicizia è molto più che simbolo di una
pace
possibile e necessaria. Attraverso l'arte e il teatro e nonostante i
tempi
drammatici, Angelica ha portato, in Israele, in Italia e in tanti altri
Paesi, un messaggio di unità e pace con il teatro dell'Arcobaleno, che
unisce ragazzi ebrei e arabi, e si occupa dei bambini feriti o
traumatizzati
per gli atti terroristici. Samar ospita invece piccoli orfani, li educa
all'amore e al rispetto, e accoglie donne in difficoltà. Questi sono
esempi

"assenza
di guerra".

Cordiali saluti

Lega Italiana per i Diritti dell'Uomo

She grew up in Rome – Italy in a very warm family that instilled in her
soul
true love for people and for the world. She studied in the Rabbinical
School
and she was a member of a Zionist – Socialist Youth Movement, she always
lived between Italy and Israel, between Jewish and Arabs, between
different
people and she felt like a bridge.

Part II – The work

Please answer all questions marked with an asterisk (*) on separate
sheets.

2. What are the specific issues she works on?*

The promotion and protection of human rights
The struggle against structural violence and discrimination (including
patriarchal, caste, class, racial, and ethnic)
Promotion of peace negotiations and conflict mediation
Health and education
Analysis of mechanisms that endanger peace
Part II – The work

Please answer all questions marked with an asterisk (*) on separate
sheets.

3. Describe the work she is being nominated for and include information
on:*

How long she has been doing this work.
What particular methods she uses in her work.
The unique features of her work.
a. Angelica has been working in education since 1970 as a guide in a
Youth
Movement. She always believed in education as an engine for change, to
improve the world and to make it a better place to live in. From the
beginning of the second Intifada she started to write in Italian
newspapers
to tell about the real and profound desire of Israel's mothers to reach
peace. One of the editors sent her to interview Samar Sahhar in East
Jerusalem and they started to "go in the same way" to explain to people
in
various parts in the world that Peace is possible!!!

b. She creates special relationships among people of different
backgrounds
through the integration of the Arts in Education, through learning the
verbal and non verbal dialog between people and through careful and
thoughtful listening of the other. The personal history of every
person’s,
culture, tradition, and dreams, became a treasure to share with other
people, to enrich them, to encourage them and to let them dare to
operate
for a positive life for themselves and the people around them.

c. The Rainbow Theatre and the Foundation "Bere**** Lashalom"

The Rainbow Theatre fashioned by Angelica is unique. She has gathered
together 28 boys and girls comprised of Russian immigrants, Arabic
children
from Fassouta, young persons from Safed (the home of Kabala), and from
religious moshavim and kibbutzim. They have produced a show named
"Bere****". It is based on mime, music and dance. Through artistic
movements
the actors express the tragic moments of two peoples, who for years have
lived for side by side, but until now have been unable to come together
in
mutual understanding, respect and peace. As the play unfolds, subtle
movements show that there is indeed an opportunity to come together in
mutual harmony and peace. It is an emotional presentation leaving many
in
the audience in tears of hopeful understanding.

The unexpected success in Israel and Italy has been an omen.

The Foundation’s aim is to support and enhance the project, the ultimate
goal is the birth of a Peace University.

A camp for children who are suffering for the consequences of terrorist
attacks: every year Angelica supports these children, who were hurt,
shocked
or lost their parents or other members of the family. She organizes with
OSE
Association from Italy and she brings them to Tuscany, in Italy and
helps
them to spend some time together and to smile again.

Angelica has also started PhD studies in Rome, University of Tor Vergata
about "The stranger in Pirandello’s works, to reach Peace through Arts".

She authored a book titled " Yes, a Beginning, a Hope" that has become
very
popular in Italy and is going to be edited in English, showing peace is
a
dream everyone can build together. She supplements this book with
lectures
to adults and children and takes part in debates to highlight the
different
viewpoints and to develop a deeper awareness of the conflict and its
tragedies but also the chance of going beyond it and using positive
strengths to build peace. Many students in Italy, for example, have asked
to
learn more and to take part in projects after they met Angelica.

Part II – The work

Please answer all questions marked with an asterisk (*) on separate
sheets.

Describe the relevant conditions (e.g. physical, economic, cultural, and
security) that were present when she started her work.*
The Intifada had begun in 2000. Angelica felt she needed to do
something.
She could not just standby and watch the terrible events taking place in
the
Middle East and in the world. She was driven by her conscience, a sense
of
responsibility, and an inner feeling even she could not understand, to
undertake whatever she could to aid the children suffering from these
tragic
times.

She started her work with no funding and was able to interest enough
people
in her dreams of peace to accomplish a great deal. In a world of many
(and
often clashing) cultures, she was able to bring diverse groups together
all
with the purpose of promoting peace, and mutual tolerance and
appreciation.

Part II The work

Please answer all questions marked with an asterisk (*) on separate
sheets.

5. What long-term improvements/changes have resulted from her work?*

Peace among children belonging to different faiths, cultures, villages and
a
bridge built between Israel and Palestine through her friendship with
Samar.
Further, Angelica spreads a dialogue of peace wherever she travels. Her
positive influence can be seen everywhere her movements have taken her,
whether in the audiences of the Rainbow Theatre, or in the people taking
part in workshop or other activities, or in those she meets in daily
life
encounters . She's helping to spread the idea of difference as something
that can enrich people and teach them to be open towards other cultures.
It
carries the message that you can love your own identity but at the same
time
appreciate and respect the love of others for their identities.

Part II – The work

Please answer all questions marked with an asterisk (*) on separate
sheets.

6. Who has benefited from the candidate's work?*

The children of Israel and Palestine are indirectly or directly
benefiting
from her work

Adults are learning the complexities of everyday life in Israel and
Palestine and are learning of the possibility and potential of change.

All who come into contact with Angelica, her articles, her theatre group
or
her book , have learned to widen one's own knowledge and to respect
other
faiths. They have also learned the value and the role of the women in
this
quest for peace. They can see from her example that an individual, like
a
flower, can unfold and use its beauty and scent for the joy of others.

Please answer all questions marked with an asterisk (*) on separate
sheets.

7. What are the difficulties she is confronted with in her work,
including
personal risk/cost, impact on family, etc.*

Angelica lives in a kibbutz near the border with Lebanon. Few people
believed in the importance of her project in the beginning and she has
worked voluntarily for many years, rewarded only by the spark in the eyes
of
the children and people working with her. Even the clothes of her first
theatre performance about peace, Bere****, were bought thanks to her
family’
s savings.

She has 4 children, she dearly loves and educates them in spite of the
growing activities and responsibilities, and more than once the members
of
her kibbutz have tried to convince her to give up, as a project based on
arts and education can’t give anything concrete. All she achieved was due
to
her efforts to convince, to explain, to show the importance of her
project.

She has lived in a very small house so far, filled with papers, books,
information about projects sent from anywhere in the world. She has no
car,
no office, she hasn’t other facilities a man having to do with similar
projects would have: yet she writes books and articles, works in
education,
projects to help children hit by terrorism, witness, theatre lessons,
workshops, community theatre, forum for Jewish and Arabic people. All
this,
while at the same time, nurturing the foundation of a fund raising group
such as Bere**** LaShalom.

Moreover she travels into dangerous area and the theater and the wounded
children has high security when they travel in the world because they
are
Israeli citizens.

Part II – The work

Please answer all questions marked with an asterisk (*) on separate
sheets.

8. Has her work inspired or influenced similar work elsewhere? If yes,
please give brief details.*

The extent of the inspiration provided by Angelica's efforts are
difficult
to quantify. Certainly the educational models she has provided for both
the
young and the old have numerous goals. She shows examples of direct
personal
change through her children thereby opening the possibility and
realization
that change is indeed possible for others. Her book "Yes, a beginning, a
hope", has been used by many teachers in schools everywhere to show how
a
different future is possible. Children from everywhere in the world are
asking if there's a chance for them to join and to take part in similar
activities. Today, of course, it is not possible. Angelica has no theatre
of
her own and no school, but if she realizes her dream, she will establish
the
first "Peace University" open to those from all over the world.

9. Explain in THREE sentences why the candidate deserves to receive the
Nobel Peace Prize in 2005.*

Her work is exemplary and worthy of emulation
She works for the cause of peace and not for political or personal gain
She includes and engages with people of different backgrounds
Samar
